When most people think of garages, they limit themselves to imagining simply a covered area to park their car. Their idea of a garage is probably an unfinished area, littered with boxes and storage containers, covered in a layer of dust. However, you can leave that image behind! Do you need extra space in your home for storage? What about a workspace, game room, home gym, or bar area? With the help of Cossentino and Sons Remodeling, you can design a completely finished garage with multiple uses beyond just storing your car, motorcycle, or boat. But which design works best for your property: attached, or detached?
Attached Garages
Of course, with any major decision comes advantages and disadvantages. One of the biggest pros to building an attached garage is the convenience of never having to leave the comfort of your home when you need to enter it. However, in the case of a break-in to your attached garage, you leave yourself at a higher risk of the intruder actually entering your home. Building an attached garage may save you money, as you will be able to use existing walls from your home and use existing electrical lines; however, how much you can actually build outwards in terms of space may be limited due to property lines or zoning issues.
Detached Garages
Without being limited by the existing structure of your home, a detached garage can be built in any shape and size as long as you have enough space on your property. However, with it being detached from your home, you will need to account for new electrical, air conditioning, and heating sources. You will also need to venture outside to get there which can be a major inconvenience in the rain and snow. Finally, the American Lung Association recommends detached garages over attached garages, as they give you less chance of breathing in harmful carbon monoxide, smoke, or fumes.
In the end, it’s your personal preference. We could all use a little extra storage and space for luxuries like that new game room or home bar we’ve always wanted. We can even build on a second story to your garage to maximize the amount of space, giving you room for additions as big as an in-law’s apartment or home office! A brand new garage can provide you with all of that and more – regardless of whether you choose a detached or attached design!
